Good Fences Make Good Neighbors: Choosing A Privacy Fence

Ricardo Obrien

What constitutes a good fence? If you're thinking about putting a fence up between your property and a neighbor's property, then you're probably looking for a privacy fence. These tall, solid fences are difficult or impossible to see through, and they really make your yard feel like a separate, isolated space. So, how do you go about choosing a privacy fence? Here are some tips to consider.

Think about how much maintenance you really want to do.

A privacy fence is quite solid and is composed of a lot of material. Think about how much time you can realistically dedicate to caring for that material. If you're retired or otherwise have plenty of time on your hands, then you may not mind a wooden privacy fence that needs to be scraped and painted every few years. But if you're in a time crunch, then a vinyl fence might be a better choice, since vinyl is low-maintenance and only needs occasional cleaning.

Consider how high you want the fence to be.

The standard privacy fence is quite high. But before you just opt for this height because it is popular, think about whether the height really suits you. If your neighbor has a deck that towers over your property, then you might need an even higher fence for privacy. On the other hand, if your neighbors are shorter people or you don't feel the need to really block their view, you may only need a 6-foot fence or so, which can be significantly cheaper than one that's taller.

Plan for a gate.

Even though the main function of the fence is privacy, if you're paying to have a fence put in, you might as well use that fence for security, too. That generally means continuing the fence around your yard. And that means you need to plan to include a gate. Automatic and powered gates are really nice, but if you're on a budget, there is nothing wrong with installing a swinging gate. Just make sure you plan for this in your budget from the get-go since a gate can add somewhat significantly to the price of a privacy fence.

Good fences make good neighbors. But, as far as what constitutes a good privacy fence, that is pretty much up to you. Keep the tips above in mind as you consider your options. For more information, contact a local fence company.
